How do I find out if a highway is closed?

Each state DOT posts its own closures on its own 511 site, in its own format. This map pulls live closures from 50 state DOTs into one view — pick your state or zoom to your area, and every current closure shows with its route and mile marker.

Why are closures given by mile marker?

Mile markers are how the road system actually locates things — every DOT closure, crash response, and dispatch call uses them. That's also why the MileCheck app shows your own mile marker in real time, so you know exactly where you are relative to a closure ahead.
