I-80 crosses about 306 miles from Council Bluffs through Des Moines and past Iowa City to the Quad Cities. I-35 runs south to north through Des Moines, where it briefly shares pavement with I-80 on the metro's north side. I-29 follows the Missouri River up the western edge through Sioux City. US-20 crosses the north through Waterloo and Fort Dodge, and US-30, the old Lincoln Highway, parallels I-80 a county to the north.
Iowa's signature hazard is the ground blizzard, clear sky above and zero visibility at windshield height as wind picks the snow up off the fields. When it happens, Iowa DOT closes I-80 and I-35 by mile range and lifts the closure the same way. Freezing rain glazes the I-80 hills east of Des Moines. Iowa DOT also publishes where its plows are, and trucks with a camera send a photo from it.
