I-40 runs about 2,557 miles from Barstow, California to Wilmington, North Carolina, crossing eight states — California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. It crosses the Mississippi River at Memphis on the Hernando de Soto Bridge and climbs into the Appalachians at the Tennessee–North Carolina line.
The Mojave stretch through California and Arizona brings extreme summer heat with long gaps between services; near Flagstaff, Arizona, I-40 climbs above 6,900 feet and gets real winter snow and ice. The Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma see high wind and occasional ice storms. A temporary fix reopened the gorge in March 2025 with one lane each direction and a reduced speed limit, and that's still the setup as of 2026. NCDOT's permanent rebuild is now priced at $2.8 billion and targeted for 2029, with two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane expected open by late 2028.
