I-15 runs about 1,433 miles from San Diego up through the Los Angeles Basin, over Cajon Pass, across the Mojave to Las Vegas, over the mountains to Salt Lake City, and north through Idaho into Montana. The LA–Vegas stretch is one of the busiest desert highways in the country.
The Southern California end climbs Cajon Pass, a wind, snow, and wildfire funnel between the LA Basin and the High Desert. Further north, winter snow and blowing snow hit the Utah, Idaho, and Montana stretches, and the Virgin River Gorge on the Arizona line is a narrow, weather-exposed choke point.
