I-90, the Thruway, is the spine, from the New York City end up past Albany, then west through Syracuse and Rochester to Buffalo, over 400 miles. I-87 runs the Thruway from the city to Albany, then the Adirondack Northway to the Canadian border. I-81 comes up from Pennsylvania through Syracuse to the Thousand Islands. I-88, I-86 and US-20 carry the traffic between and below.
Lake-effect snow off Erie and Ontario can drop feet, not inches, on I-90 and I-81 in hours, and when a travel ban or closure comes down it is announced by milepost. The Thruway posts speed reductions and commercial-vehicle bans by mile range. Long stretches of the Northway and I-81 run through remote country, and downstate, a coastal storm can shut the bridges and parkways for high-profile vehicles.
Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the 511NY feed held 4,649 unique reports, including 265 closure reports, 169 crash reports and 4,169 work-zone reports. The routes with the most reports were I-80, I-287 and US-9. Counts reflect what the feed publishes, so a state whose DOT posts only closures shows only closures. Read the September Highway Report.

Closures the DOT has posted for a future date are listed as scheduled, and ramp and lane closures sit under the toggle so the list stays readable. It reloads every five minutes.
