The Garden State Parkway runs about 172 miles from Cape May at mile 0 to the New York line, the shore-traffic backbone of the state. The New Jersey Turnpike carries the heaviest truck and through traffic in the Northeast, overlapping I-95 for much of its run. I-78 and I-80 cross the state east to west toward the Hudson crossings. I-295 and US-1 handle the Philadelphia-side and central corridors.
New Jersey's hazards are mostly human-made, summer shore congestion, dense truck traffic and constant construction, but coastal storms and nor'easters flood shore routes and shut causeways too. The shore is drawbridge country, and an opening can stall a whole barrier island. On the Turnpike, saying Turnpike rather than I-95 and giving the mile marker is what gets a tow truck to the right roadway.
Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the 511NJ feed held 3,364 unique reports, including 129 closure reports, 33 crash reports and 2,975 work-zone reports.
