I-70 crosses about 424 miles from the Colorado line through Hays, Salina and Topeka to Kansas City, the longest I-70 stretch in any state. I-35 and the Kansas Turnpike link Oklahoma, Wichita, Topeka and Kansas City. US-54 and US-50 cross the southern half, US-81 runs north to south through Salina, and US-83 serves the far west, where towns are forty miles apart.
Winter brings ice and blowing snow across the open western half, and KDOT closes I-70 by mile range when a ground blizzard takes the visibility. KanDrive posts the closure gates and the reopenings. Spring brings severe storms and tornado warnings, and KanDrive posts storm damage and closures by route and mile. West of Salina one mile looks like the next hundred, so the milepost is the location, full stop.
Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the KanDrive feed held 211 unique reports, including 78 closure reports, 12 crash reports and 89 work-zone reports. The routes with the most reports were I-70, US-54 and I-135. Counts reflect what the feed publishes, so a state whose DOT posts only closures shows only closures. Read the September Highway Report.
The map above shows every full closure KanDrive is publishing as a red marker, crashes in orange, and weather and hazard alerts in blue and purple. Closures the DOT has posted for a future date are listed as scheduled, and ramp and lane closures sit under the toggle so the list stays readable. It reloads every five minutes.
