I-95 crosses roughly 200 miles of pine flats where every mile looks like the last. I-26 drops from the mountains near the North Carolina line through Spartanburg and Columbia to Charleston and the coast. I-85 carries the Upstate, Greenville and Spartanburg, between Charlotte and Atlanta. I-20 links Columbia west toward Augusta and Atlanta.
When a major hurricane threatens Charleston, South Carolina can reverse the eastbound lanes of I-26 so every lane flows inland toward Columbia. The reversal points, crossovers and re-entry instructions are all announced by mile marker. Winter ice is rare but shuts the Upstate when it comes, and 511SC posts closures and incidents by route.
Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the 511SC feed held 22 unique reports, including 6 crash reports and 9 work-zone reports.
