I-40 crosses the whole state, Memphis through Nashville and Knoxville to the North Carolina line, about 455 miles. I-24 cuts diagonally through Nashville and Chattanooga. I-65 runs south to north through Nashville, and I-75 links Chattanooga and Knoxville on its way to Kentucky. I-81 peels off toward Virginia in the Tri-Cities corner of East Tennessee.
The fog banks where I-40 threads the gorge at the North Carolina line are notorious. Visibility can collapse with almost no warning, and pile-ups there have closed the interstate for hours. Winter ice on the Cumberland Plateau grades and spring thunderstorms across Middle Tennessee round out the driving weather. Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the SmartWay feed held 244 unique reports, including 101 closure reports, 3 crash reports, 123 work-zone reports and 2 weather reports. The routes with the most reports were I-24, I-40 and I-75. Counts reflect what the feed publishes, so a state whose DOT posts only closures shows only closures. Read the September Highway Report.
The map above shows every full closure SmartWay is publishing as a red marker, crashes in orange, and weather and hazard alerts in blue and purple. Closures the DOT has posted for a future date are listed as scheduled, and ramp and lane closures sit under the toggle so the list stays readable. It reloads every five minutes. If the feed cannot be reached the page says so instead of showing an empty map. For the official list, open SmartWay.
