I-70 runs about 2,153 miles from central Utah to just outside Baltimore, and its signature stretch is Colorado — climbing out of Denver into the high country through Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel, the highest point on the entire Interstate Highway System at 11,158 feet.
The I-70 mountain corridor west of Denver is one of the most weather-sensitive stretches of interstate in the country — snow, avalanche control closures, and holiday ski traffic all combine through Georgetown, the tunnel, and Vail Pass. East of the Rockies, the high plains of eastern Colorado and Kansas bring wind and occasional ground blizzards; further east, Midwest ice storms hit Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio in winter.
