I-95 is the spine, Kittery, Portland, Augusta, Bangor, then the long run north to Houlton, about 302 miles. I-295 splits off at Portland and hugs the coast through Brunswick before rejoining I-95. US-1 follows the coast the whole way, Ogunquit, Camden, Bar Harbor traffic, and eventually Fort Kent. US-2 crosses the state east to west through Bangor and the western mountains toward New Hampshire.
Winter is the story north of Portland. Snow and ice on I-95 through the woods north of Bangor, long gaps between exits, and moose at dawn and dusk. On the coast, nor'easters flood US-1 in the low spots. MaineDOT posts closures and conditions on 511 Maine by route and mile.
In September 2026, MileCheck's archive of the New England 511 feed held 46 unique reports, including 13 work-zone reports. The routes with the most reports were US-1, US-201 and I-95.
