I-95 is the spine, Kittery, Portland, Augusta, Bangor, then the long run north to Houlton, about 302 miles. I-295 splits off at Portland and hugs the coast through Brunswick before rejoining I-95. US-1 follows the coast the whole way, Ogunquit, Camden, Bar Harbor traffic, and eventually Fort Kent. US-2 crosses the state east to west through Bangor and the western mountains toward New Hampshire.
Winter is the story north of Portland. Snow and ice on I-95 through the woods north of Bangor, long gaps between exits, and moose at dawn and dusk. On the coast, nor'easters flood US-1 in the low spots. MaineDOT posts closures and conditions on 511 Maine by route and mile.
