I-55 follows the old Route 66 line about 294 miles from the St. Louis area through Springfield and Bloomington to Chicago. I-57 runs the length of the state from Cairo to Chicago's South Side. I-80 crosses east to west south of Chicago, and I-74 links the Quad Cities, Peoria and Champaign. The Tollway, I-88, I-90, I-294 and I-355, carries the Chicago region's daily traffic.
Illinois winters bring prairie crosswinds and blowing snow across the open downstate stretches, and fast-forming ice on bridges. Downstate is landmark-poor. Between Springfield and Bloomington on I-55, or for hours down I-57, exits can be many miles apart, and IDOT posts every closure by route and milepost. In Chicago, spring and fall are bridge-lift season on the Chicago River.
Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the Getting Around Illinois feed held 1,072 unique reports, including 273 closure reports, 18 crash reports and 487 work-zone reports.
