I-40 is the state's spine, about 420 miles from the mountains at the Tennessee line through Asheville, Winston-Salem and Raleigh to the coast at Wilmington. I-95 carries the East Coast through the flat farmland of the eastern part of the state. I-85 and I-77 link Charlotte and the Piedmont to Virginia and South Carolina. US-70 and NC-12 reach out toward the Outer Banks.
North Carolina gets weather from both ends. On the coast, hurricane season means evacuation orders, lane changes and closures on US-70, NC-12 and I-40 east of Raleigh, all by mile marker. In the mountains, winter ice and rockslides shut I-40 through the Pigeon River Gorge west of Asheville, sometimes for days. NCDOT posts closures by route and mile on DriveNC.
Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the DriveNC feed held 1,221 unique reports, including 115 closure reports, 5 crash reports and 1,098 work-zone reports. The routes with the most reports were I-40, I-85 and I-95. Counts reflect what the feed publishes, so a state whose DOT posts only closures shows only closures. Read the September Highway Report.
The map above shows every full closure DriveNC is publishing as a red marker, crashes in orange, and weather and hazard alerts in blue and purple. Closures the DOT has posted for a future date are listed as scheduled, and ramp and lane closures sit under the toggle so the list stays readable. It reloads every five minutes. If the feed cannot be reached the page says so instead of showing an empty map. For the official list, open DriveNC.
