I-80 crosses the north of the state for about 311 miles from the Ohio line to the Delaware Water Gap. The Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-76, runs Pittsburgh to Philadelphia through the tunnels of the Alleghenies. I-81 runs the Susquehanna and Wyoming valleys from Maryland to New York, I-95 clips the southeast corner through Philadelphia, and I-79 links Pittsburgh with Erie.
Lake-effect snow off Lake Erie hits I-90 and I-79 near Erie, and I-80 across the Allegheny plateau closes for snow and pile-ups in whiteouts. PennDOT and the Turnpike post vehicle restrictions in tiers during winter storms, and 511PA carries them by route and mile. Fog on the plateau and in the river valleys is the spring and fall problem.
Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the 511PA feed held 549 unique reports, including 12 closure reports, 41 crash reports, 456 work-zone reports and 2 weather reports. The routes with the most reports were I-81, I-80 and I-78. Counts reflect what the feed publishes, so a state whose DOT posts only closures shows only closures. Read the September Highway Report.
The map above shows every full closure 511PA is publishing as a red marker, crashes in orange, and weather and hazard alerts in blue and purple. Closures the DOT has posted for a future date are listed as scheduled, and ramp and lane closures sit under the toggle so the list stays readable. It reloads every five minutes.
