I-55 runs the state north to south, about 290 miles from the Louisiana line through Jackson and Grenada to the Tennessee line. I-20 crosses east to west at Jackson, linking Vicksburg to Meridian and on toward Alabama. I-10 hugs the Gulf through Gulfport and Biloxi. I-59 and US-49 connect the coast up toward Hattiesburg and Jackson.
When a hurricane threatens the Mississippi coast, evacuations move north off I-10, up US-49 toward Hattiesburg and Jackson and up I-55 and I-59 away from the water. Those movements are coordinated by route and mile marker. Spring brings severe storms and flooding along the Mississippi and Pearl rivers, and MDOTtraffic posts the closures by route.
Over 25 daily snapshots from September 1 to 25, 2026, MileCheck's archive of the MDOTtraffic feed held 168 unique reports, including 20 closure reports, 21 crash reports and 127 work-zone reports. The routes with the most reports were I-55, I-20 and US-49. Counts reflect what the feed publishes, so a state whose DOT posts only closures shows only closures. Read the September Highway Report.
The map above shows every full closure MDOTtraffic is publishing as a red marker, crashes in orange, and weather and hazard alerts in blue and purple. Closures the DOT has posted for a future date are listed as scheduled, and ramp and lane closures sit under the toggle so the list stays readable. It reloads every five minutes.
