Parleys Summit carries I-80 over the Wasatch Range at ~7,020 ft. Here's what to watch, and when it bites.
Parleys Canyon funnels every Salt Lake–to–Park City driver up a steep grade into Wasatch snow, and UDOT runs chain and traction restrictions here through the winter. Heavy snow and blowing snow in the canyon can slow it to a crawl or close it, and truck restrictions are common when the grade turns icy. Check the cameras before you head up.
On a snowy morning, Parleys stacks resort-bound traffic, freight, and commuters onto the same steep grade. That is why a single spun-out truck can back the canyon up for miles. At about 7,020 feet at the summit, conditions here can be completely different from the dry valley floor a few minutes behind you.
