Cajon rarely closes for its elevation alone, but it's a wind, snow, and wildfire funnel. Winter storms occasionally drop snow to the summit and force chain controls. Strong Santa Ana and canyon winds flip trucks. In fire season, blazes in the pass have shut I-15 entirely. The cameras tell you which of those, if any, you're dealing with today.
I-15 through Cajon Pass is one of the most heavily traveled mountain crossings in the country. The whole Los Angeles-to-Las Vegas flow squeezes through here, on top of daily High Desert commuters.
