Eisenhower Tunnel carries I-70 over the Continental Divide at 11,158 ft. Here's what to watch, and when it bites.
The tunnel bores through the Continental Divide, so it doesn't close for snow the way an open summit does. The approaches on both sides do, for avalanche control, whiteout conditions, and the crashes that pile up on a steep, high-altitude grade in bad weather. Chain law and traction law restrictions on I-70 through this stretch are common all winter, and holiday ski traffic can back the approaches up for miles even in clear weather.
At 11,158 feet, the Eisenhower Tunnel is the highest elevation reached anywhere on the U.S. Interstate Highway System. Air is noticeably thinner here, grades are steep on both approaches, and the westbound bore (Eisenhower) and eastbound bore (Johnson) are close enough together that an incident in one often slows traffic in both.
