How Indiana numbers its highways
Indiana's mileposts count up from the south or west edge of the state and rise as you head north or east. On I-65, mile 0 is at the Ohio River across from Louisville, and the numbers climb to about 262 at the Lake Michigan end near Gary. The exception is the Indiana Toll Road — the I-80/I-90 corridor along the state's northern edge — which carries its own milepost line, counting up from the Illinois line toward Ohio. The corridors people actually drive
- I-65 runs diagonally from Louisville through Indianapolis to Gary and the Chicago approaches.
- I-70 crosses east-west through Terre Haute, downtown Indianapolis, and Richmond.
- I-69 heads northeast from Indianapolis to Fort Wayne and on toward Michigan.
- The Indiana Toll Road (I-80/I-90) runs the north edge past South Bend and Elkhart, and I-465 loops Indianapolis where all of it meets.
Where mile markers matter most
Two places, really. First, the Indianapolis knot: when I-65 and I-70 cross downtown and I-465 wraps the whole city, a report of "a crash on 65" means little without a mile marker and direction. Second, the long flat stretches in between — I-65 through the farm counties and I-70 across the west of the state offer few landmarks, so when you break down, the little green sign is the location. On the Toll Road, mileposts also track you between widely spaced exits and travel plazas.
Winter squalls and construction season
Northern Indiana catches lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan — the Toll Road and I-94 corridor near Gary and South Bend can whiteout while Indianapolis stays dry. And like everywhere in the Midwest, summer means orange barrels: work zones move week to week, and INDOT announces every one by route and mile marker.
