Do mile markers start at the state line?
Usually. On most interstates, mile 0 is at the south or west state line and the numbers go up as you drive north or east. Cross into the next state and the count starts over at 0.
When mile 0 is somewhere else
A route that starts inside a state starts its count there. A spur or a highway that begins at a junction has its mile 0 at that junction, not at a border.
Some states count differently:
- California uses postmiles, which start over at each county line. The same number can appear in several counties on one highway.
- Georgia numbers state routes by county, so the posts restart at county lines. Georgia interstates run statewide.
- Vermont signs on US and state routes restart at town lines.
Why it matters
When you report a location, give the state and county along with the number in those places. Mile 22 on a California route can be in more than one county.

Questions, answered
Which way do the numbers go?
Up going north or east, on most routes. A route the state classifies as north-south counts from its south end. An east-west route counts from its west end.
Is there a mile 0 sign?
Sometimes. Many states post a 0 at the state line. Others start with 1.
