I-81 runs about 855 miles from its start at I-40 near Dandridge, Tennessee to Wellesley Island, New York at the Canadian border, crossing six states — Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York. Virginia carries the longest and busiest stretch, at roughly 325 miles.
Virginia's stretch of I-81 is one of the most truck-heavy corridors in the country and has one of the highest truck-crash rates in the state, mostly on aging two-lane sections through mountain terrain with steep grades and few passing lanes. VDOT's "Improve 81" program — a $4 billion, 65-project effort including new truck climbing lanes and widening — is actively under construction, with an updated Corridor Improvement Plan approved in January 2026.
