On I-80 that means mile marker 0 at the California line near Verdi, with the numbers climbing east through Reno, Winnemucca, and Elko to the Utah line near Wendover, around mile 410. US-50 earned its nickname honestly. Between Fallon, Austin, Eureka, and Ely, the towns sit about an hour apart, and in between there's no gas, no cross streets, and often no cell bars. If you break down out there, your location IS your mile marker — it's the reference a tow dispatcher or a 911 operator will ask for, and it's the one thing that pins you to a specific point on 400 miles of nearly identical two-lane. The same math applies to US-95, US-6, and most of rural Nevada.
Weather across the basins
Nevada's hazards flip with the seasons: summer heat that punishes a stranded vehicle, and winter storms that shut I-80 over the ranges and glaze US-50's summits with black ice. High-wind restrictions and closures come and go quickly on the open stretches, and NDOT announces every one of them by route and milepost.
