What is a zipper merge?

What a zipper merge is

A zipper merge is what you do when a lane is closing for construction or a crash and traffic is heavy: drivers use both lanes all the way to the merge point, then take turns — one car from each lane, alternating like the teeth of a zipper — to blend into the open lane. Nobody races ahead and nobody merges a mile early; everyone just takes their turn at the front.

Why merging early is actually worse
