Sand vs salt vs brine: how roads are treated for winter

When a winter storm hits, crews reach for one of three tools — salt, sand, or brine. They work in completely different ways, and knowing the difference explains a lot about what you're driving on.

Salt: melts the ice

Salt (rock salt) is the workhorse. It lowers the freezing point of water, so ice and snow melt instead of bonding to the pavement. It needs a little moisture and traffic to get working, and it loses effectiveness in extreme cold — below roughly 15°F, plain salt struggles. It's cheap and effective in most winter conditions, which is why you see it everywhere.

Sand: adds traction

Sand doesn't melt anything. It's spread on top of packed snow and ice to give your tires something to grip — pure traction. Crews use it when it's too cold for salt to work, or for immediate grip on a hill, a curve, or an intersection. The trade-off is cleanup: sand has to be swept up later and can clog storm drains.

Brine: prevents ice before it forms

Brine is salt already dissolved in water — the liquid you see sprayed on the road in stripes before a storm arrives. Because it's already wet, it works immediately and sticks to the pavement, keeping snow and ice from bonding in the first place — that's called anti-icing. It uses less salt overall and is often cheaper and easier on the environment than dry salt, which is why more agencies pre-treat with it.

What is the difference between salt and sand on roads?
