A visit and a move have different rules
Check the licensing agency for every state on your route. These examples concern private driving by adults. They do not cover commercial vehicles or the additional rules for younger drivers.
Do not use your visa’s expiry date as a state driving deadline.
When you become a resident

Start before the deadline. These are not promises that an appointment or application lets you keep driving after your existing privilege ends.

Residency is more than a day count
California looks at your permanent home and intent to return there. Its examples include voter registration and resident tuition. A short holiday and moving your home are different situations.
Ask the state agency if work, study or a split-year stay makes your status unclear.

Canadian and Mexican licences
A foreign licence’s acceptance for a visit does not mean it can be exchanged without testing after a move. Texas separates reciprocal driving privileges from its new-resident process. Check the issuing country and your circumstances instead of assuming every foreign licence gets identical treatment.
If you are stopped
Carry the original licence and any required translation. Keep the rental agreement or vehicle documents and proof of applicable insurance accessible.
If your licence is expired or your visitor privilege has ended, do not drive while trying to resolve it. An International Driving Permit cannot make an invalid licence valid.
