MileCheck Road Report: August 14–31, 2026
MileCheck captured one daily snapshot from state and highway DOT feeds (not city roads) across all 50 states and British Columbia from August 14–31. Here is what we found.
The counts reflect events present when each daily snapshot was taken. They do not include every event an agency may have posted and removed between snapshots, and states differ in what they publish.
Roy’s read2,750 distinct fires appeared in the data. At their largest reported extent during the window, they accounted for 6,883,330 acres. This is not acreage burned between August 14 and 31 — it’s the biggest size each fire reached, at any point, while we were watching. A fire that started in July and was already huge by August 14 still counts at its full size.

Closure and crash counts describe what agencies exposed through these feeds. States differ in how much they publish, so these are not a count of every closure or crash that occurred.
Wildfires in the data
The reporting window contained 2,750 distinct fire records, tracked separately from the road-event count above. Their largest reported acreage values during the window totaled 6,883,330 acres.

California had the most distinct fire records: 505. Oregon had 280, but those records accounted for 3,021,326 acres at their largest observed extent, about fifteen times California's total in this dataset. Fire count and reported acreage measure different things.
Another 277 DOT alerts mentioned fire, smoke, closures, or detours.
Long-running road projects
We filtered for roadwork with published start and end dates, removed completed items, weight restrictions, and records without enough detail to classify, then identified the longest-running project in each jurisdiction. The table shows selected examples, one per state.
Washington's entry differs from the others, and it turned out to be a bigger story than our own record showed. Our archive listed SR-165 as closed "until further notice" at the Carbon River/Fairfax Bridge. WSDOT's own newsroom confirms it further: a 103-year-old bridge, permanently closed after inspectors found a support column bent and buckling in two directions, with no public detour to Mount Rainier National Park's Mowich Lake entrance — only a gated emergency road restricted to first responders. WSDOT is now studying whether to rebuild the bridge or remove it for good. (WSDOT)

A New York-labeled I-91 record was dropped from this table. I-91 runs through Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont, not New York, and the cross streets named in the record (Wallingford, Meriden) are both Connecticut towns matching Connecticut's own feed. The record is filed under New York in our archive — a source-labeling issue we're investigating upstream, not something we're going to paper over in the copy.
Most entries are partial restrictions, not full closures, and independent reporting backs up what our own records show. Wisconsin's I-535 entry describes a shoulder closure, but MnDOT's own project page shows it as an early phase of a much larger job: the John A. Blatnik Bridge, carrying I-535 over the Minnesota–Wisconsin state line, is headed for a multi-year full closure and replacement starting in 2027 (MnDOT). North Carolina's US-17 lane closures match NCDOT's April 2026 bridge-preservation announcement for the same corridor (Coastal Review). Idaho's I-84 width and speed restriction matches ITD's own posted project details almost exactly (ITD). Illinois's I-80 ramp closure lines up with IDOT's Center Street interchange closure, which began the same week our record's start date shows (IDOT). SR-165 is the only entry describing a closure to all traffic. We checked Texas and Alabama the same way and found real, active TxDOT and ALDOT work in both corridors, though not detailed enough in either agency's own postings to confirm the exact lane configuration in our record.
What happened in your state, August 14–31
All 51 alert-integrated jurisdictions, deduplicated the same way as the rest of this report. Closures, crashes, and roadwork counts describe what each agency exposed through its feed — states differ enormously in how much they publish, so these numbers say more about that state's reporting than about which roads are actually busier. Wildfire acreage uses each fire's largest reported extent during the window, the same as the national figures above. One known gap: Washington's feed often lacks a real route ID, so its most-mentioned list can include local street names rather than highways.

Method
- Coverage. August 14 to 31, using one daily snapshot from each state and British Columbia.
- Road events. Deduplicated by the incident ID supplied by each agency. A week-long event counts once. An event that appeared and disappeared between daily snapshots may be absent.
- Wildfires. Deduplicated by fire ID. Acreage uses the largest value observed for each fire during the window, not acreage burned during the window. A fire is counted once, at the largest size it reached on any day it appeared in our daily snapshots — not the sum of daily growth, and not limited to growth that happened between August 14 and 31.
- Long-running work. Ranked by each record's published start and end dates. Completed work, weight restrictions, and records without enough detail to classify were excluded.
- Comparisons. States publish different amounts and types of data. On a single day in August, New York published nine times as many records as Ohio. Event counts therefore describe the feeds, not traffic volume, road quality, or incident rate — which is why this report doesn't rank states or highways against each other by event count.
