The display has its own GPS, so it tracks your position and finds your mile marker on its own — no phone needed once it's set up, no lag waiting on a Bluetooth link while you're driving.
Bluetooth is only for occasional syncs: pairing with your phone every so often to pull the latest milepost data (new states, corrected mile markers, road-alert info) and any firmware updates. Day to day it just runs on its own.
