Mt Baker Highway carries SR-542 over the Cascade Range at 4,200 ft. Here's what to watch, and when it bites.
SR-542 is plowed to the ski area all winter. The last miles past the ski area to Artist Point close for the season, usually from fall until midsummer. Above Glacier the road is narrow and winding, and WSDOT often requires traction tires or chains in storms.
Glacier is the last town with services on the way up. Cell coverage is spotty above it. WSDOT runs no traffic cameras on SR-542 (checked October 2026), so the map shows alerts only. To see whether Baker is out today, use the Mt Baker view page.
