Before you drive the Coquihalla

Printable map

The Coquihalla is a four-lane freeway, but it climbs about 1,200 m from Hope in under 60 km and gets heavy snow. Here is what applies.

Winter tires or chains

BC requires winter tires (M+S or the mountain snowflake) or chains on Highway 5 from October 1. Signs at Hope and Merritt show the dates in force. Commercial trucks must carry chains in that window and use the chain-up areas when DriveBC calls for them.

When it closes

Highway 5 closes for crashes, spun-out trucks and avalanche control, sometimes for hours. When it does, the detours are Highway 3 through Princeton or Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon, both much longer. Check the map before you leave Hope.

From Seattle

Cross at Sumas–Abbotsford, take Highway 1 east to Hope, then Highway 5. The cameras here start near Box Canyon and run to the Coquihalla Lakes area.
