What are driving conditions like on I-40 in late November?

I-40 crosses northern Arizona and continues east to the Pigeon River Gorge at the Tennessee and North Carolina border. Snow-related restrictions can affect the western route, while the gorge has operated with reduced lanes during its rebuilding. Check the current status of both areas before leaving in late November.

Which stretches of I-40 need attention?

Traveling west to east, start with northern Arizona. I-40 passes the Arizona Divide near Flagstaff, just west of Exit 190. ADOT has closed sections of I-40 during snowstorms, including an event in January 2026. Use Arizona 511 to check the section you plan to drive, including any current restrictions or closures.

Continuing east, use the state reports for New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. No 2021 through 2025 Thanksgiving-week closure was verified for the Arizona Divide or Tijeras Canyon.

At the eastern end of I-40, the Pigeon River Gorge has a different issue. Flooding from Hurricane Helene washed out four long sections of eastbound roadway in 2024. The affected crossing between North Carolina and Tennessee reopened March 1, 2025, with one lane in each direction over about 12 miles. The reopened section extends from Cold Springs Creek Road at Exit 7 in North Carolina to Big Creek Road at Exit 447 in Tennessee.

The last status in this brief, from June 2026, still reported one lane each way at 35 mph. Full four-lane restoration was expected in fall 2028. That June report is not a current November status. Confirm the configuration with DriveNC and Tennessee SmartWay before planning a crossing.

What restrictions matter in late November?

California's chain controls are activated by storms rather than by a fixed calendar date. At R-1, chains are required except for qualifying passenger vehicles and light trucks with snow tires on at least two drive wheels. Those vehicles still must carry chains. At R-2, all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels may proceed without installed chains but must carry traction devices. R-3 requires them on every vehicle. Check the posted signs rather than assuming a control is in effect on I-40's California desert section.

Along the other western and central states, DOT sites provide the current posted restrictions and closures during storms. Check each state's report for your intended segment before setting out. The brief does not establish a single seasonal restriction schedule for the whole I-40 corridor.

The gorge is a separate planning issue from chain controls. When NCDOT reopened it in March 2025, the temporary layout had a 35 mph speed limit, a nine-inch concrete divider between opposing lanes and no wide loads. Check whether those restrictions still apply before leaving. Drivers of wide loads should verify the current designated route with the state agencies.

What happened in recent late Novembers?

In November 2024, the Pigeon River Gorge remained closed after Hurricane Helene. On November 5, 2024, NCDOT said it hoped to reopen one lane each way by January 1, 2025. That was a target date, not an actual reopening. The roadway reopened with the temporary configuration on March 1, 2025.

Thanksgiving 2025 was the first Thanksgiving after that reopening. NCDOT advised drivers to consider an alternate route because the gorge had restricted lanes. The agency recommended using I-26 between Asheville and Kingsport, then I-81 South to I-40. In a separate November 10, 2025 event, icy conditions caused a standstill on I-40 between Haywood and Buncombe counties in North Carolina.

What does the national Thanksgiving forecast show?

AAA's 2025 national Thanksgiving forecast projected 81.8 million travelers going at least 50 miles from home from November 25 through December 1, 2025. At least 73 million were expected to drive. Those are 2025 national forecast figures. They are not I-40 traffic counts or predictions for Thanksgiving 2026.

For 2025, INRIX expected pre-holiday congestion on Tuesday from noon to 9 PM and Wednesday from 11 AM to 8 PM, using local metro time. Sunday was forecast to be congested from 11 AM to 8 PM. Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. A national traffic window does not account for a road closure or a single-lane section.

Where can I check I-40 conditions before leaving?

For the western route, use Caltrans QuickMap, Arizona 511 and New Mexico Roads. For the central states, check DriveTexas, Oklahoma Traffic and IDrive Arkansas. These sources are more useful for departure decisions than a previous November's conditions.

At the eastern end, check Tennessee SmartWay and DriveNC. The I-40 corridor page and North Carolina camera page can add route context. Check the actual lane arrangement and posted vehicle restrictions before leaving. If you reconsider your route during the trip, review updated reports while parked.
