The road to Mount Baker

SR 542 is the Mount Baker Highway. It runs from Bellingham through Glacier to Artist Point. WSDOT reports the state highway data.

Daytime closures September 30 to October 6, 2026

The Forest Service lists closures between Silver Fir Campground at milepost 48 and Picture Lake at milepost 54 on September 30, October 1, October 5 and October 6. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic cannot pass in either direction during that work.

SR 542 to Artist Point

The Mount Baker Highway climbs from Bellingham to Artist Point at 5,140 feet. The final 2.7 miles above the ski area close for winter. Snow removal determines the opening date. In 2026, WSDOT reopened that section on June 10.

Through Glacier

SR 542 passes through Glacier before the climb to Heather Meadows and Artist Point. The Forest Service highway page lists the Glacier Public Service Center near milepost 34 for forest-road and trail information.

How high is Artist Point?

Artist Point is at about 5,140 feet at the end of SR 542. The WSDOT pass report lists the highway pass elevation separately.

When does the road to Artist Point close?

WSDOT closes the last 2.7 miles each fall, typically with the first snowfall. The opening date depends on snow removal and road conditions.
