The roads to Denali

Denali Park Road is inside the national park. AK-3, the Parks Highway, is the approach road from Anchorage and Fairbanks. The two roads have different operators and different access rules.

Denali Park Road

Denali Park Road runs 92 miles to Kantishna. During summer bus operations, private vehicles can drive to Savage River at mile 15. After buses stop in September, NPS allows private vehicles to Teklanika River at mile 30, weather permitting, through October 15. Snow or ice can close the road earlier at park headquarters. Check the NPS seasonal access page.

Pretty Rocks bridge is complete

NPS announced completion on September 3, 2026. The bridge crosses the landslide near mile 45. Hikers and cyclists could cross from August 27, but buses were limited to East Fork at mile 43 for the 2026 season. Full bus service is expected in 2027.

AK-3, the Parks Highway

AK-3, the George Parks Highway, is the approach from Anchorage and Fairbanks. Alaska State Parks lists Denali View South at mile 134.8, near mile 135, and Denali View North at mile 162.7. Both are in Denali State Park, outside the national park.

How far can private vehicles drive in Denali?

During summer bus operations, private vehicles can go to Savage River at mile 15. In fall, after bus service ends, NPS allows travel to Teklanika River at mile 30 through October 15 if weather permits. Check current NPS conditions before leaving.

What is AK-3?
